Chapter Twenty-One
Quinn
I've officially become that person.
I don't want to be that person. Especially because being that person usually necessitates being in a relationship, and as I very adamantly told Judy earlier, I am not in a relationship. Nevertheless, here I am.
For the second year in a row, my favorite holiday, the Fourth of July, is marked by stressing out over a man. Liam and I spent the morning and early afternoon wandering around the village with virtually everyone else in Magnolia Falls. We visited every block party and stopped by all the demonstrations and games set up around the island. By the time we got to the Green for the picnic, he'd already made his way through two ears of grilled corn, several slices of watermelon, a snow cone, and a hot dog. Yet he still managed to sample everything spread out on the community tables, from the hamburgers to the potato salad to at least five flavors of gelatin.
I even had the unique pleasure of watching a small crowd of women gather around him and listen intently as he waxed philosophical on the differences between the layered desserts on the picnic tables and the true trifles back home in Scotland. Of course, that lecture ended with the conclusion that the Scottish version was inherently better due to the inclusion of fruit jelly and a considerable amount more booze.
It was exactly what the Fourth of July in Magnolia Falls is supposed to be. I loved seeing his eyes light up when the bands marched down the street with little children running along beside them holding red, white, and blue pinwheels up into the sky. He even reached down to hold my hand during the flag ceremony, and I noticed a mist of emotion in his eyes. Today reminded me why this time of year is my favorite, creating that small town, nostalgic feeling that so rarely happens. It's like going back in time and remembering simpler things. The scorching day and constant roaming around the island left me exhausted, and I was glad for the chance to take a break when we headed back to my house.
That was three hours ago.
So, now I'm here, being that person.
Where the hell is he?
Liam gave me absolutely no indication of where he was going or what he was doing during the break. He just dropped me back off at the house, instructed me to take a nap and relax, and promised to be back. It's that ambiguity at the end that's starting to get to me. I'm trying not to admit how much it bothers me to think about what he might be doing. I shouldn't really care where he is or who he may be with.
I've refused to call him. He has no obligation to me and nagging him is just one of the many things that sets a fake relationship apart from a real one. Time is ticking by, and my fingers are starting to tingle with the desire to scoop up my phone and find out what happened to him.
